The Trials and Tribulations of Michael Rensing and FC Bayern Munich

By: Aryo Michaelsen
Wednesday, 2nd September 2009

For the past two seasons Bayern has played (though not consistently) with a certain Michael Rensing in goal, and for those past two seasons he has come under constant criticism. Rensing, yhe on and off first choice goalie for Bayern Munich took over the reins of Oliver Kahn at the start of the 2008-2009 Bundesliga season, starting as first choice goalie but ending up on the bench for the last couple games.

Now, only 4 matches into the new season, the 25 year old ex-German U21 international goalie is starting from the bench again. After a 2-1 defeat to Mainz, a match where his costly blunder lead to one of the goals, veteran German goalkeeper Hans-Jörg Butt was reinstated as number one. This has spawned a media frenzy as they as they (vultured at) {pounced on,)every blunder he has made throughout his reign as Bayern’s first choice, and constantly (?) compared him to past Bayern Number ones stressing their need to acquire a new one.

Although Rensing cannot be compared with past Bayern goalies, maybe that’s what needs to be done. Steer clear of commenting on his mediocrity, and perhaps, with time, he will grow into that goalkeeper that he believes he can become and we can focus on the real problems with the club.

Bayern has a stubborn management, which doesn’t want to be told what to do and doesn’t want to be proven wrong. For example, their ever changing goalkeepers, due to last season’ sudden lack of confidence, for a second time appointed him, their first choice goalkeeper but don’t really seem to care about Rensing. History seems to be repeating itself.
In addition, demonstrating their indifference to Rensing by attempting and failing to sign goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from rivals Schalke last month. But perhaps, failing to replace Brazil’s captain, Lucio That gap clearly needs to be filled, with Bayern’s other South American defender, Demichelis injured, and given Van Buyten’s dismal display in Mainz.

Lucio, was arguably Bayern’s best defender; His biggest drawback is that he’s a loose cannon. He tends to overcomplicate the simple, and is often caught out of position due to his attack instincts. The media is pointing the finger at the wrong person, or in this case, party. Instead of buying two good defenders, a right back, a position severely in need of coverage since Willy Sagnol’s untimely retirement, and a center back. Bayern brought in a whole bunch of mediocre players (most of whom they didn’t have to pay for) who simply aren’t up to Bayern Munich standards.

With that said, I propose a simple solution. Buy a right back and a center back. Many players that might consider a move to Bayern come to mind. Sticking to the team’s tradition of buying German internationals, they could sign Per Mertesacker or Arne Friedrich. If those players cannot be signed, why not sign Luisao, a player constantly rumored to be moving outside Portugal, or maybe the Italians Zaccardo, Barzagli, or Legrottaglie, maybe even Lucio’s national team-mate Juan, or Schalke right back Rafinha. All good players, who could be acquired for half the price of their last major purchase, Mario Gomes.

Maybe I, like all other impatient Bayern critics, are not giving the team enough time to gel. Plus, its not like the board is going to spend any more money on their squad, especially after forking out €25 million on Dutch winger Arjen Robben. Finally, with the transfer window closed, it looks like no one will be coming in any time soon. Or at least till January. Buy after Bayern’s convincing 3-0 win over champions Wolfsburg, and Robben bagging two goals on his debut. It looks as though slowly but surely, the club is getting their act together.

Barcelona back to the top (1st assignment)

Barcelona back to the top

FC Barcelona was able to come back from the dead. After two trophiless seasons under Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona has added new silverware to their cabinet.
Barcelona favourite Josep “Pep” Guardiola was appointed as the new Barcelona manager. In his debut season, he won a ‘treble’, winning the La Liga, UEFA Champions League, and the Copa Del Rey.

However, their success wasn’t his doing alone. Helped by the three forwards, Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi, and Samuel Eto’o. The trio which scored more goals than any other, With Lionel Messi finishing top scorer with 38 goals.

On top of their “treble”, Barca defeated arch rivals, Real Madrid twice this season, which was even sweeter given the 6-2 thrashing they gave them in front of their supporters. They are currently ranked number one in the fifa world rankings and two of their star players,. Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandes, were nominated for the FIFA Player of The Year Award.

The team has achieved what no other Spanish league team can. The 2008-09 season has been very successful for Barcelona. It seems as though little changes will be made to the team and they will definitely start the new season stronger than ever, so beware.

Feature Article Analysis

Assignment 2
Feature Article Analysis

By: Aryo
8/5/2009

This essay will attempt to analyze the feature article “The Best Science Show on Television” by John Schwartz. This essay will be divided into two parts. I will begin by analyzing the writer’s style of writing and then continue by critiquing on the article.

In the beginning of the article Schwartz gives us a snapshot of the setting of a recent episode of the “Mythbusters”. This anecdotal approach he seems to carry on throughout the article. He then diverts from the backdrop to gives us some background info on the show, an introduction to the “Mythbusters”. No startling facts, just the standard W5. He also gives a couple examples of what type of myths they try to solve. A brief background on the stars of the show follows, facts about what the two star of the show do in their spare time. Then he goes back to the beginning scene he gave us and continues to explain what the “Mythbusters” are doing on that day’s episode. He also tends to dramatize dialogue and quotes by or from the shows stars, an example of this being (“Failure,” Mr. Savage said, “is always an option.”) where he divides the quote in two, with the first part only being the first word from the quote. He finished the article with a narrative, adding a few quotes to add to the image. The last couple quotes (Earlier in the day, Mr. Hyneman said that he sometimes worried about “glorifying explosions,” which could send the wrong message to young and impressionable viewers. “If I had my druthers, we wouldn’t be blowing stuff up,” he said. Mr. Savage appeared behind him. “But then we wouldn’t have a show,” he said with a crackle, and darted away.) Added a hint of irony to the picture, totally contradicting everything they’ve done for the duration of their airtime.

The article was well written, but it lacked a more in-depth look into the topic. It was too much of an “A day in the lives of the ‘Mythbusters’” than on why they are the “best” science show on television. Nor did he put any real startling facts about the show. The writer also left out a major part of the “Mythbusters”, the sidekicks. Kari, Tory, and Grant play an equally important role into why the show is successful, more so Kari than the other two. Other than that I felt the article was well done, and did the “Mythbusters” justice.

In conclusion, the piece was mainly and anecdote with a W5. It also failed to mention some aspects of the show that I felt should have been added. In addition, he did not vary the approach he took to writing the article. On the other hand, it still delivered its message and was highly entertaining.

Lunch with Megawati

Lunch with Megawati
Aryo Suharnoko-Michaelsen
Saturday, 3rd July 2009

On Friday the 2nd of July, I attended a luncheon at the intercon Jakarta hosted by the JFCC, the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club; an event where presidential candidate Megawati Sukarnoputri was going to speak. After a 30-minute wait and a quick 3-course meal, she took the stage. After reiterating her recurring theme of potential voter fraud at the polls, she stated her goals and visions for an Indonesia under Prabowo’s, I mean her power. Her intention to “revive” the ancient system of “gotong royong” and independence. Goes on by saying that globalization is “incorrect” but will not close the doors to foreign investment. But as she ended her speech, the fun really began.

Question time. Really called Question and Answer time on the days agenda, but because its Megawati, Question time would suffice. So as the questions flew across the hall and some futile attempts at answering them rolled across the carpet (due to the occasional interpreting slip up), a few stood out. When asked of her view on whether to ban smoking or not her answer was that it would it be unfortunate for the clove farmers. She continued by saying that the problem was not in the cloves but the nicotine, a real shocking revelation, a true Megawati moment. Then when asked about her relationship with current Indonesian president and fellow candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono , affectionately known as SBY. She said it was “Quite good”, Javanese for I have his F*&king guts.

I looked up and saw the oddly tall figure of one Dedy Corbuzier. At first glance he seemed no taller than the average Indonesian, he turned out to be at least 180cm. Dressed from head to heel in his trademark black blazer and turtle-neck, black jeans and boots. A bit strange seeing a man dressed like it’s the middle of winter in the Jakarta sun. Although it would’ve been surprising seeing him in anything else.

The pasar minggu gothic make-up made it, obvious. The sculpted widow’s peak of his carefully shaved hair-line barely passed the center of his scalp. Not to mention that geometrically (painted on) beard, which was more reminiscent to a scene from the movie Signs than something that would be on some ones face. Overall, it a look resembling the penguin more than other magician or illusionist.
